A few minutes after Ruben Amorim was fired at Manchester United in early January, there was one name several English media pulled out as the biggest favorite to replace the Portuguese. Oliver Glasner’s contract at Crystal Palace expires at the end of the season, so the timing is perfect for United. Following Michael Carrick’s success as interim United manager, the Austrian’s name has been less mentioned in the rumour mill in England.

Glasner’s career took off when he worked in the Bundesliga for Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt – with the latter winning the Europa League title in 2022. He was lured to England in February 2024.

The 51-year-old stayed on an upward trajectory as he led Palace to the club’s first major title – when they shocked Manchester City in the 2025 FA Cup final. The Eagles beat Liverpool in the Community Shield and worked their way into the Conference League.

In the Conference League, there has been advancement to the quarter-finals, but even a title here does not hold the Austrian back in London. He has already announced he will start again when his current contract expires in the summer.

Glasner was considered a leading candidate to take over Old Trafford after Ruben Amorim’s departure, but former Palace star Clinton Morrison believes the Austrian has talked his way out of position for this job.

“His shares were so high, but everything that has happened and everything he has said in the media (criticism of the club and owners) – other clubs will see it and think: Do we really want someone like that in our football club? The job he’s done at Palace has been brilliant, but sometimes you’re just judged on the last things you’ve done. He can certainly get a job in Europe, but at the moment I’m thinking about how they finish the season – and if they can win the Conference League – that his stock rises again, and there will be a lot of clubs that will tempt Glasner. Definitely,” Morrison said, according to Goal.

But not Manchester United.
