The biggest and best clubs on the ball island have an absolutely insane match schedule. Premier League, League Cup, FA Cup and games in Europe. This is added to the national team service for a large part of the squad. Every season, we have heard managers at Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United complain about an “inhumanly” tight schedule with no time for training. For the latter, the situation is completely different. Manchester United haven’t had that much time for training in over a hundred years.

Ruben Amorim led Manchester United to a final defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League last season. On Sunday, substitute Darren Fletcher led United out of the FA Cup as well, with a 1-2 loss to Brighton.

Out of both cups and out of action in Europe, Manchester United now only get 40 games in total this season. This will be the fewest number of games played for United since the 1914-15 season (39), reports Goal.

By comparison, United played 60 games last season, having reached the Europa League final, League Cup quarter-finals and fifth round of the FA Cup, in addition to the 38-game Premier League season.
