After two very short stints as manager of Birmingham, then Plymouth Argyle, Wayne Rooney has decided to take a break from being yelled at by supporters and journalists. As a football talker, he can now reminisce about the good old days, comment on today’s players and coaches, plus drop some “secrets” that ensure headlines.
Wayne Rooney wore the Man United shirt from 2004 to 2017. Now he talks about the time around 2010, when he was actually done with Manchester United.

“When I told Manchester United in 2010 that I didn’t want to sign a new deal and made a transfer request, three clubs came in for me,” Rooney told the BBC.
“Manchester City is often referred to as one of them, but I don’t think it was ever an option for me – the teams that made a rapprochement were Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona. In my head, I was ready to go and play in Spain, and some conversations took place. A deal with Real looked more likely for a couple of days, but it was Barcelona I thought about the most, and how I could fit into their team with Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Sergio Busquets,” Rooney reminisces.
Who dropped Barcelona, but it is quite clear that the English legend could have imagined the experience of being fed balls by the football geniuses Messi, Iniesta, Xavi and Busquets. Epic.
“In the end, I decided to stay at United, but the Barca team was fantastic and everyone wanted to play here,” Rooney concluded.
