Nicky Butt has given his support to Frank Lampard for another spell as Chelsea boss, saying he would do a “fantastic job” back at Stamford Bridge.
Lampard looks set to lead Coventry City back to the Premier League, as the Sky Blues are nine points clear at the top of the Championship with seven games left to play.

Coventry have been in brilliant form under Lampard, with just seven defeats in a highly competitive league, and have scored 81 goals – 14 more than any other Championship club.
This is arguably Lampard’s most successful spell as a manager, following his previous stints at Chelsea, Derby County and Everton.
Chelsea legend Lampard was appointed manager at Stamford Bridge in 2019 and had a promising start to his tenure, leading the Blues to a fourth-place finish in the Premier League and to the FA Cup final, which they lost to Arsenal.
The west London club continued to impress at the start of Lampard’s second season in charge, as they won their Champions League group and climbed to the top of the Premier League in early December.
However, Chelsea then won just two of the next eight games and dropped to ninth place, which led to Lampard being sacked at the end of January 2021.
A disappointing spell at Everton followed, before Lampard returned to Chelsea during the 2022/23 season as interim manager after Graham Potter was sacked.
However, Lampard was unable to change the mood in west London, winning only one of his eleven games as manager, which resulted in Chelsea finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
However, Lampard has not had such problems at Coventry, and Manchester United hero Butt believes he should now be a candidate for the Chelsea job again.
A large proportion of Chelsea’s supporters have already begun to lose faith in Liam Rosenior, who was appointed in January after Enzo Maresca’s departure.
Chelsea were thrashed 8-2 by PSG in the Champions League and have dropped to sixth place in the Premier League, six points outside the top four, since Rosenior took over.
The Blues are willing to give Rosenior more time to turn things around, but Butt believes Lampard would do a “fantastic job” back at Chelsea if they were to be looking for a new manager in the near future.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Butt stated: “Do you think that if Frank Lampard gets promoted with Coventry, that they can go back to Frank?
“He got the job too early the first time, I think, and he had a transfer stoppage, so he had to use a lot of young players.
“It wouldn’t be stupid to bring Frank Lampard back as Chelsea boss, for me. He has done a good job at Coventry.
“He’s got a bit more experience now and he probably made some mistakes the first time. People have to understand that transfer stops mean you have to rely on a lot of young players, it must have been difficult for him.
“He would be a completely different manager now. I think Lampard would find it easier to work with better players, it would be easier for him to get his message across to more technical players.
“If Frank went back to Chelsea, with all the experience he has now, I think he would do a fantastic job, I really think so.”
Coventry took a step closer to promotion on Saturday with a convincing 3-0 win away to Swansea City. They face Derby County in their first game after the international break.
