Manchester United are looking for a new permanent manager before the 2026/2027 season, and according to the Manchester Evening News, England manager Thomas Tuchel is now the preferred candidate.

I’ll honestly admit I’ve never been a big fan of the German manager, his stats especially considering that he has managed an impressive number of clubs are not good enough to declare him one of the world’s best.

Michael Carrick was brought in as interim manager until the end of the season in January, and he has had a phenomenal start with four wins from five games, as well as one draw. As things stand, Carrick is ready to leave the club at the end of the season, unless he can impress enough to convince United to offer him the permanent position.

Carrick has undoubtedly improved Manchester United in recent weeks, but whether that is enough for him to become permanent manager remains to be seen.

Manchester United have identified preferred permanent candidate

According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, England manager Tuchel has been identified as the preferred candidate to take over from Carrick in the summer. Tuchel is now in the driver’s seat for the job, as Luis Enrique and Carlo Ancelotti are not interested in the role at Old Trafford.

Tuchel’s contract with England expires after the World Cup later this year, meaning he is free to return to the club managerial role in the summer. Whether he stays with England will likely depend on their success in the tournament, and it is unclear whether he would be interested in staying even if they win the World Cup.

Tuchel, described as “one of the best managers in the world” by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, believes GSM will undoubtedly bring a long-awaited winning mentality to United, having won the Champions League with Chelsea. The German manager has achieved great things in football, and it is no surprise that the Red Devils are interested.

Manchester United must discuss Michael Carrick hiring

There must be someone in the United management who is tempted by the prospect of hiring Carrick on a permanent basis. The results so far speak for themselves, and to bring a player like Kobbie Mainoo back into the fold and get the best out of him is a very positive sign.

The United players seem to enjoy playing for the former Middlesbrough manager, and he is definitely someone that supporters can rally behind. He has handled himself well in the media, something former manager Ruben Amorim was criticized for.
