Manchester United will probably have to prepare for a game against Tottenham Hotspur for the signing of Bryan Mbeumo. – Their biggest weakness besides the obvious, Tottenham are in the Champions League, while Manchester United are not even eligible to play in Europe.

Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo has reportedly named Manchester United as his preferred choice, and the clubs are in talks over a transfer, but now Tottenham are suddenly in the picture.

The situation has become more complicated after Bryan Mbeumo’s current manager, Thomas Frank, has been linked with the vacant manager’s job at Tottenham after Ange Postecoglou was sacked on Friday.

According to The Mirror, Frank has already informed Spurs that he wants to hijack United’s deal for Bryan Mbeumo – which puts Ruben Amorim’s plans in jeopardy.

Spurs or United?

Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League in the season that just ended – two places behind United – but their victory in the Europa League final against Manchester United them Champions League football next season.

United cannot offer Mbeumo European football at all, but since the striker has reportedly already rejected Newcastle United, continental football may not be the most important thing for him.

Good fit for both clubs

The 25-year-old Mbeumo will fit well into Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, while he could have competed for the spot on the right wing with Brennan Johnson at Spurs.

It’s worth noting that Frank has shown that he can adapt attacking systems to get the best out of his players. Mbeumo was a clear winner of this in the 2024/25 season, scoring 20 Premier League goals despite Ivan Toney leaving Brentford in the summer of 2024.

If Mbeumo ends up signing for Tottenham, it won’t be surprising if Frank manages to get both him and Johnson to play together in the same starting eleven.

The battle for Mbeumo is on, and with Tottenham’s Champions League place and Frank’s possible role there, United may have to work hard to secure the signing. Now it remains to be seen where Mbeumo wants to continue his career.
