New disappointment for United ahead of the summer transfer window

Manchester United have missed out on a significant financial entry after Chelsea won the Conference League final against Real Betis.

The Blues turned 0 – 1 into a 4-1 win in Wrocław, Poland, after goals from Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Jadon Sancho and Moisés Caicedo in the second half. With the victory, Chelsea made history as the first team to win four major European Cup titles, following previous triumphs in the Champions League, Europa League and Cup Winners’ Cup.

Lost bonus funds for United
United followed the final with one eye, as both Antony (on loan at Betis) and Sancho (on loan at Chelsea) were involved. While Sancho scored for Chelsea, Antony had limited impact on the game.

According to Spanish ABC, Betis had paid United 150,000 euros before the final as part of the loan deal. This sum was dependent on Betis qualifying for the Europa League via La Liga, and Antony playing at least half of the games he was available for.

An additional payment of €365,000 would be triggered if Betis won the Conference League – a bonus United are now missing out on.

Antony’s uncertain future
Antony is expected to return to Old Trafford before the 2025/26 season, but his long-term future at the club is unclear. In an interview with TNT Sports Brazil before the final, the 25-year-old expressed that he is enjoying his time at Betis and hinted at a desire to leave United:

“I feel I could have done more in the United shirt, but I’m also grateful for all the love I got there. It was a difficult period, but now I’m happy and smiling. Future? I focus on performing – my agent handles the rest.”

This marks yet another financial and sporting challenge for United in a critical transition period.
