“Manchester United lost 1-0 in the season opener”.

A Manchester United player is “pushing” for a move away from the club after the team’s first Premier League game against Arsenal, according to reports.

Manchester United lost 1-0 to Arsenal at Old Trafford, but showed a more aggressive and attacking style compared to much of last season. Ruben Amorim’s side dominated possession, shooting 22 times to Arsenal’s nine, but were unable to equalise after Riccardo Calafiori’s first-half goal.

Leave and transfer speculation

After the game, the focus was as much on the missing players as on the performance. Both Rasmus Højlund and André Onana were excluded from the squad.

Hojlund is attracting loan interest from AC Milan, while Onana’s future is also being questioned after Amorim selected Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton for the match.

Harry Amass wants to leave

18-year-old Harry Amass – United’s “Young Player of the Year” 2024/25 – took part in the club’s post-season trip to Hong Kong in May, but did not get any game time in the pre-matches.

BBC Sport reported that he was withdrawn from the U21 team’s game against Tamworth this week due to an expected loan transfer.

Amass has been linked to crisis-stricken Sheffield Wednesday for several weeks.

Sheffield Wednesday’s situation

“The Owls” were under a transfer embargo after failing to pay player salaries for two months in a row. Several players broke their contracts and left the club in July.

The embargo was lifted on August 10 after the club paid outstanding debts, but they cannot pay transfer or loan fees for new players until 2027.

Amass wants playtime

BBC journalist Karan Vinod reports that an agreement has not yet been reached between the clubs, but that Amass is “pushing” for a move to Wednesday in order to get regular game time.

Wednesday plays with five defenders under new manager Henrik Pedersen. With Liam Palmer at temporary left-back and Max Lowe at centre-back, Amass could get significant game time at the Championship club who are already battling relegation.

In Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Stoke, Wednesday’s bench – apart from striker Ike Ugbo – consisted only of U21 players, underlining their desperate need for new reinforcements.

Key points:

  • Amass, 18, is United’s big talent but is looking for playing time
  • Sheffield Wednesday can only offer free loans due to financial restrictions
  • The club has an acute shortage of players after this summer’s exodes
  • The transfer depends on United’s willingness to let him go without compensation
