It was really boiling in Bournemouth on Friday. Manchester United have a good grip on the Champions League ticket with their third place in the Premier League, Carrick chasing another victory. It ended with a 2-2 draw and a score, but after the game, Carrick was otherwise very annoyed with refereeing decisions. Now the club is following up with a complaint.
It was football-dramatic when Harry Maguire received a red card for fouling Evanilson in the box, which led to a penalty. Shortly before, a similar incident had taken place in the second penalty area. Here, Amad Diallo was fouled, but the referee overlooked the situation. This later caused both Bruno Fernandes and Michael Carrick to react. “Either one is a penalty – and then the other is too – or neither is a penalty,” Bruno Fernandes told Sky Sports after the game.

According to English journalist Ben Jacobs, Manchester United intend to file an official complaint with the PGMOL (the English referees’ association). They believe Amad Diallo was fouled without the Bournemouth player trying to go after the ball. United believe this is a clear VAR error, and they also refer to the situation surrounding Harry Maguire’s red card, which was comparable.
The Premier League has already been out defending decisions. On the incident with Amad Diallo, the Premier League explains: “The referee’s decision not to award a penalty after a tackle by Truffert was checked and confirmed by VAR – as it was deemed that the contact was not sufficient to constitute a foul.
About the incident of Harry Maguire’s red card and penalty to Bournemouth, the explanation is: “The referee’s decision to award a penalty and red card to Maguire for preventing an obvious scoring opportunity (DOGSO) was checked and confirmed by VAR – as it was assessed as a holding without an attempt to play the ball.”
