There are reportedly two reasons why Tony Coton is now being sacked, one is Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s austerity program and the other is a message from manager Ruben Amorim.

After a serious leg fracture ended his playing career, Coton was appointed goalkeeper coach by United in 1997.

He remained in the role for a decade, during which time the club won Treble and six Premier League titles, before a serious knee injury forced him to retire in 2008. He returned to Old Trafford as a goalkeeper scout in 2020 – and has been ever since.

Football Insider writes that Rúben Amorim is not impressed with Manchester United goalkeepers Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir he inherited from Erik ten Hag and who the goalkeeper scout blamed for bringing in. The Portuguese has been clear to the management – who will now act by sacking Coton.

This is also said to be part of the INEOS management’s very intrusive austerity programme.

Tony Coton has previously been a scout for Aston Villa and Sunderland, among others.

As a player, he was a goalkeeper who made 500 appearances in the Football League and Premier League for Birmingham City, Watford, Manchester City, Manchester United and Sunderland.
