At the beginning of March, the betting group has Oliver Glasner as the second most likely Man Utd coach from next season. Not surprisingly, Michael Carrick has placed himself as the favourite, with a winning streak that gives hope for United with the existing squad. Now there are warnings that United boss Ratcliffe and management are falling into another “Amorim trap”.

Glasner has moved in as one of the favourites to take over from Ruben Amorim, with an FA Cup title, a Community Shield win over Liverpool and several strong individual games in the Premier League. Glasner defied the established belief that the same 3-4-3 formation that Amorim had struggled with could not work in the Premier League. Man Utd spent close to £250 million on players designed for this system, the Austrian looked like a logical choice to continue on the same path that United had invested in.

This has changed. Michael Carrick has since January emphatically shown Man Utd players perform best outside of 3-4-3, while Glasner, with 3 wins in the last 17 games (12 in a row without a win), plus the shock FA Cup defeat to amateur side Macclesfield, has really made Glasner’s image as the poster boy of the 3-4-3 formation in England fade.

The Austrian is leaving as a free agent this summer, English Goal goes so far as to promise that Manchester United will make the same mistake as with Ruben Amoroim, by hiring Oliver “3-4-3” Glasner.
