Manchester United interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder João Gomes.

The Red Devils appear to be looking to bring in a new midfielder to Michael Carrick’s squad before the transfer window closes, and have identified the Brazilian as an effective addition.

Gomes is also a target for both Atlético Madrid and reigning Serie A champions Napoli, who have reportedly outlined the 24-year-old as a prime target for the summer transfer window.

The Italian club have initiated early discussions around a deal for Gomes, but a switch appears to be more likely after the season if Wolves are relegated from the Premier League.

Manchester United are keeping a close eye on João Gomes

According to CaughtOffside, Manchester United have been keeping tabs on Gomes since the summer and see him as a player who will add energy, aggressiveness and depth to the midfield.

The Red Devils are preparing for a future without Casemiro, whose contract expires in June, and could go in for Gomes after the season, when Wolves are likely to lower their asking price.

Gomes, who has been praised for his “insane work rate”, has been an important player for Wolves since joining Molineux from Brazilian club Flamengo in January 2023.

The 24-year-old was rewarded with a five-year contract in April 2025, but could be looking towards a post-season departure due to Wolves’ precarious position in the Premier League.

Although they are unbeaten in their last four games, Wolves are still last in the table, a whopping 14 points from safety.

They have only secured six points in 11 games under new manager Rob Edwards, who replaced Vítor Pereira in November.

Manchester United to hold transfer meeting

After hiring Michael Carrick as interim boss last week, it is expected that United will shift their focus towards potentially strengthening the squad with new signings before the window closes.

According to GIVEMESPORT’s senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano, United are expected to hold a meeting with Carrick early this week to discuss their marketing plans, as they have yet to record any major transfer activity this month.

Carrick secured a 2-0 win over Manchester City in his first game in charge on Saturday, and United won for the first time in four league games.

“The Red Devils” visit Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.

Exchange for Rúben Neves is being considered

Manchester United were recently linked with a swap for Al-Hilal star Rúben Neves, whose contract with the Saudi Arabian club expires at the end of the season.

The Portugal international is said to be open to leaving Al-Hilal this month, two and a half years after joining from Wolves, where he made 253 appearances.
