When an English League Cup is played, anything can happen. The football mosquitoes meet the giants, Arne Scheie’s words of wisdom are still alive: In a cup, anything can happen. Last week it also happened. League Two club Grimsby Town sent the Manchester United players into a football shock state on the players’ bus with a loss and out of the cup. Now it turns out that Grimsby “cheated”, and has to pay a hefty fine for a small club. United will not benefit from the rule violation.

It all boils down to the fact that Grimsby Town player Clarke Oduor was registered one minute late to be part of the Grimsby team, but played anyway.

Grimsby Town are fined by the EFL, and accept it without flinching.

-Oduor’s registration was sent to the EFL one minute after the deadline, and the problem was not immediately discovered due to a computer error at Grimsby. We accept the fine and fully recognize the importance of complying with the competition’s rules and regulations,” the club writes.

The fine is £20,000. A significant amount for a fourth-division club, but we bet the historic victory over one of the world’s biggest clubs eases the financial pain.

We bet Manchester United also see no reason to file a complaint that an “illegal fourth division player” decided the cup match.
