Not many days after Ruben Amorim agreed with Manchester United on the coaching job, the Sporting coach was asked which players he will bring with him in January. The answer was: “None”. No one came either, but this summer there is “free” access. Now they are working to bring a very expensive teenager to Old Trafford.

Geovany Quenda is only 17 years young, but had a natural place in the starting eleven for Amorim and Sporting when they hosted Manchester City in the Champions League and played their way to a 4-1 victory with an assist from Quenda.

The teenager has been a regular in the starting eleven at Sporting this season, has made his debut for the Portuguese U21 national team and is on the verge of making his debut with Ronaldo and the big boys. Portuguese A Bola reported before Christmas that Manchester United had started the job of positioning themselves for the signing of Quenda. According to journalist Ben Jacobs, there is progress in transfer talks for the 17-year-old, who himself is tripping impatiently to play in the United shirt for mentor Amorim.

However, there is still a long way to go before the clubs agree. According to Jacobs, Sporting are demanding 60 million euros, Manchester United have valued Quenda at around 40 million euros.

The question that needs to be asked is whether Ruben Amorim will lead Manchester United next season as well. 15th place in the Premier League after a loss to Tottenham and a solution not in sight, does not guarantee that Quenda’s mentor will hold the Old Trafford fort in August as well.
