Bruno Fernandes’ contract with Manchester United includes a release clause that will allow him to join a club outside of England for a surprisingly low sum.

Earlier this year, Fernandes considered an offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal, who were willing to pay around £100 million for the Portuguese midfielder.

In fact, the Saudi Arabian club presented a salary package believed to be worth £700,000 per week – a significant increase from his reported salary of £300,000 per week at Manchester United.

Al Hilal were confident that an offer would be accepted due to Manchester United’s financial difficulties, and Fernandes’ agent, Miguel Pinho, travelled to the Middle East for negotiations. However, during a press conference ahead of Portugal’s Nations League match against Germany in June, Fernandes confirmed his decision to turn down the offer and stay in Manchester.

“It would have been easy to go there,” Fernandes said.
“I know the Portuguese players there very well. But I want to play at the highest level and fight for big titles,” he added. “I can, and I still will. I’m very passionate about football.”

Months later, Fernandes has again spoken out about his future ahead of what is likely to be his 300th game for Manchester United later this Saturday when they host Brighton at Old Trafford.

“As I’ve always said, I like it here. I still want to achieve my dreams,” the Portuguese key player told BBC Sport.
“I can’t speak for the club. I’ve seen a lot of people talk about how I had an agreement to leave as early as next season. If the club has made that agreement, it was not made with me. I haven’t spoken to anyone.”

He added, “My agent also knows how I work. If he wants to talk to me, it will be after the World Cup. Until then, I don’t want to talk to anyone.”

Bruno Fernandes’ contract includes a surprise £56m transfer clause

The report claims that Fernandes’ contract with United includes a clause that would allow him to join a club outside England for £56.68m, provided it is “triggered early enough”.

The midfielder signed a three-year contract extension in 2024, which includes an option for another year.

As mentioned above, Fernandes seriously considered a move to Saudi Arabia. In addition to confirming talks with Al Hilal’s president, Fahad bin Nafel, he detailed the conversation he had with Rúben Amorim.

“I spoke to coach Amorim,” Fernandes said. “He told me not to go. Manchester United didn’t want to sell me. They don’t need the money. If I had wanted to go, they would have made it happen.”
