Andre Onana was Erik ten Hag’s first choice when he ensured that David de Gea did not get an extension in the summer of 2023, after finishing the season as the Premier League’s best goalkeeper. The former Ajax goalkeeper of Ten Hag had been outstanding at Inter Milan, who went all the way to the Champions League final. Then came his debut season in the United shirt, a start the supporters do everything to forget.
Onana alternates between the impossible saves and the unbelievable blunders. Erik ten Hag spent much of last season defending his first goalkeeper, which says it all when Ruben Amorim also has to stand behind Onana and assure him has confidence, despite the last round of blunders.
The English media has over the past year reported that Manchester United are aiming to sign a new first goalkeeper. A few months before the transfer window reopens, there is therefore great excitement as to who United can afford to bring to Old Trafford – and what happens with Onana.
When the flop Antony had half his body out of the Unted squad in the last year under Ten Hag, United tried to send the Brazilian on loan to make room in the wage budget, but Antony refused. His agent went out last summer and gave a clear message: Antony is not budging, he will fight for playing time.
In January, Antony realized his own best, took the offer of a loan to Real Betis – and has not regretted it for a second.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Andre Onana has the same attitude as Antony – in the first round. The local newspaper claims Onana has no desire to leave United, he will not be pushed out and will fight for playing time.
Antony refuses to budge last summer, but changed his mind six months later. If Manchester United bring in a new first-choice goalkeeper this summer, it is questionable whether Onana also “understands her own best” around the New Year.
