Liam Delap was going to Manchester United, but chose Chelsea. For £30 million, the London club acquired one of England’s biggest striker talents. A loss United can just shake off and forget? Not if we are to believe Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.
Delap has made his breakthrough with former Man United manager Kieran McKenna in the Ipswich shirt, the season in the Premier League ended with an impressive 12 league goals for the 22-year-old, this for the league’s second weakest club.

There is also no doubt that Delap has a potential so much greater than what he showed this season. The Chelsea manager firmly believes this is the player who can take over from Harry Kane in the England national team.
“I have no doubt that in the future he can be England’s number 9. Liam knows very well how important the number 9 is for this club… I see a Liam who is quite relaxed, he is doing well. We already know each other, I know what Liam can give us, he knows what we can give him to improve and become a better player,” said a satisfied Maresca according to Goal.
Manchester United have previously tried to persuade Harry Kane to wear the Manchester United shirt, but the Premier League’s second all-time highest-scoring player opted for the Bundesliga and Bayern. Now United supporters must also see a future potential Kane replacement on the England national team deliver the goods outside Old Trafford.

This could be one of the lost United signings that could come and “haunt” the club if Enzo Maresca is right about Delap – and Manchester United continue to miss their own No. 9.
