Manchester United are in the process of securing Benjamin Sesko, and their next likely signing has been revealed.

United are working hard to make Sesko their fourth summer signing, having brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon.

Sesko, who is also a top target for Newcastle United, has reportedly agreed to personal terms on a proposed five-year contract at Old Trafford – which is believed to be his preferred choice.

United made a bid of £74m for the RB Leipzig striker, but still need to find a full and final deal to secure their new No. 9.

Even if United were to secure Sesko ahead of Carabao Cup winners and Champions League participants Newcastle, it is believed that the club’s summer activity is still not over.

According to Fabrizio Romano, who has been following the Sesko case closely, the 13-time Premier League champions have “full focus” on the 22-year-old, but if “an opportunity should present itself in midfield, United could go for it”.

United have yet to strengthen that part of the squad, having let Christian Eriksen leave when his contract expired.

Carlos Baleba from Brighton has been mentioned as a potential signing, but according to Spanish Fichajes, United’s priority is to go after Barcelona midfielder Fermín López.

Manchester United’s next priority after Benjamin Sesko

López forced his way into Barcelona’s first team with a string of impressive performances during the 2023 preseason under Xavi Hernández.

He then scored 11 goals in 42 games in his breakthrough season, and followed that up with eight goals and ten assists in 46 appearances in all competitions as Barcelona won La Liga and the Copa del Rey under Hansi Flick last year.

The 2024 European Championship winner is not a regular in the team, with the likes of Pedri, Gavi and Dani Olmo competing for a place in midfield.

According to the report, United, who let Marcus Rashford go to Barcelona, are optimistic about doing business again for around £61 million (€70 million).

“The young Barcelona talent has become Manchester United’s main target to strengthen the midfield in this transfer window,” the report reads.

“At Old Trafford, they see the Andalusian player as a player who can make a difference, and the English board are already working on an offer that could be around €70 million (£61 million) to convince the Catalan club.”

In October, López signed a new contract with Barcelona until 2029 – with a €500 million buyout clause in the deal.
