Thomas Tuchel is said to have received the offer before Ruben Amorim when Ten Hag still had the job, but turned down the opportunity to manage Manchester United, German media reported. The former Chelsea manager had set his sights on one of the world’s toughest international jobs, leading the Three Lions to the final title, after a lifetime without a championship trophy. Now Ten Hag and Amorim are history, with Tuchel constantly being mentioned by the English media and pundits as a top candidate to manage United next season. This was effectively torpedoed on Thursday.

Sky Sports reported earlier this week that Michael Carrick will not be offered the permanent job during the season, even with a continuation without defeat and well on his way to securing a Champions League ticket. Carrick will have to wait until after the end of the season, and get in line. Now it turns out this queue is getting shorter.

Not anymore. A lot can happen in the World Cup finals with Tuchel’s position as national team coach, but the signal is clear: Managing Manchester United is not a dream job for Thomas Tuchel.
