There is always a “next-game-can-the-coach-get-fired” vibe around Manchester United. Perhaps not so strange, when we have seen more than a handful of coaches come and go since 2013. Now Ruben Amorim stands with a trust given by United boss Ratcliff, no other post Perguson coach has been shown by the management, even though Amorim was not the obvious choice for the job. In fact, there were as many as seven candidates on the wish list – before Amorim.
The Ahtletic are known for having their facts in order, this week reports that Manchester United were on many trips outside of Amorim, before ending with a signing a year ago.

It was quite a bunch of coaches who were on the wish list of Ratcliffe and the gang: Roberto de Zerbi. Thomas Tuchel. Mauricio Pochettino. Thomas Frank. Marco Silva. Graham Potter.
The English media adds yet another name. Thiago Motta was also on the radar, but United did not have time to contact the Italian, who took the coaching job at Juventus. Where he was fired fairly quickly.
Okay, then we are up to seven candidates before Ruben Amorim is even mentioned. It doesn’t say anything about the order of priority of the candidates, but says a lot about the fact that Manchester United hadn’t singled out the one coach they just had to have: The perfect one for the job (we have our candidate for this in Solskjaer).

According to the English media, the United management is said to have started talks with some of the candidates already after the 2024 FA Cup final, before Ten Hag was given an extension.
Not that this bothers Ruben Amorim one millimeter, but for United supporters an eye-opener. It is still good that the results for Amorims United have started to come when The Ahtletic scrolls through the original list of candidates.
