A day after Arsenal stumbled at home to Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium, City delivered a dominant second half and narrowed the gap to the league leaders to six points.

Nico O’Reilly opened the scoring with a header just after half-time, before Guéhi and Jeremy Doku added extra brilliance to a crucial win for Pep Guardiola’s men – who face Arsenal in a top-flight match next weekend.

January signing Guéhi scored his second goal for the club and cheered with pure passion, before being named the best player on the pitch by Gary Neville on Sky Sports’ live broadcast.

However, the England player did not accept the award in an interview with Patrick Davison. Instead, he gave the award to his teammate Cherki – who set up both his goal and O’Reilly’s goal.

The duo then headed back down the aisle, with a smiling Cherki holding the yellow award.

Neville had admitted that he would rather have given the award to O’Reilly if the 21-year-old hadn’t been forced off the pitch with a hamstring injury in the second half.

But Guéhi was hailed online by fans for his classless gesture, which emphasizes his humble personality.

One fan said: “Guéhi just gave the award for the best of the pitch to Cherki. The most humble footballer.”

A second wrote: “Even Marc Guéhi knows that Cherki should have been the best on the pitch, haha.”

A third user added, “Guéhi was speechless that Cherki wasn’t named the best player on the pitch by Neville, lol.”

A fourth commented: “Guéhi gives Cherki his award for the best on the pitch – top guy and leader.”

Looking back on the huge three points, Guéhi said: “I think especially in the second half we did well. We just want to improve and get better. When you have players like this guy [Cherki], it’s amazing. We keep our feet on the ground, recover and focus on the next one.”

“The most important thing is that we did the job today and we focus on the game that comes now. Let’s move on to the next one.”
