Marcus Rashford is facing a possible registration problem with Barcelona, even after the transfer from Manchester United is complete.

Transition at risk

Rashford has already undergone the medical test at Barcelona and is ready for a loan from Manchester United. The Spanish giants have agreed to cover the 27-year-old’s wages during his loan spell, after Rashford accepted a 25 percent pay cut.

Manchester United have also informed Barcelona of what it will cost to sign him permanently. Rashford is expected to be officially unveiled this week – but there is no guarantee that he will actually play for Barcelona in the 2025/26 season.

Registration problems threaten

Barcelona considered Rashford after they failed to secure Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams. La Liga president Javier Tebas claims that the Williams transfer fell apart because the club could not guarantee his registration.

Now Rashford is warned that he could face similar problems.

According to Andy Brassell, there is no certainty that the England international will be approved to play:

“He’s taking a pay cut for this to happen, but there’s still no guarantee – at least not if you believe La Liga president Javier Tebas – that Barcelona will be able to sign him immediately,” he said on the Trans Europe Express podcast.

“It’s something we have to keep an eye on, as with all Barcelona’s signings. This is what made Nico Williams pull out of the deal.”

Both parties need the transition

Brassell added:
“Rashford doesn’t have a lot of options, partly because of his salary, partly because of two disappointing seasons – even though he showed glimpses of his old form at Aston Villa.”

“Both sides needed this transfer very much, which is good news for Marcus Rashford, good news for England, and if everything works out, it’s also good news for Barcelona.”

Barcelona’s previous registration problems

The club has had similar problems before:

  • Dani Olmo had to wait two La Liga games before he was registered.
  • Jules Koundé was not registered in time for the season opener when he arrived from Sevilla.

Barcelona must now work quickly to ensure that Rashford is registered before the season opener against Real Mallorca on August 16.

What now?
If Rashford is not approved, Barcelona could be without a key attacking player – and Rashford himself risks having to wait in the wings. Will this be a new transfer saga, or will the club get its paperwork in order in time?
