Between 2015 and 2017, the teenager Ødegaard was part of Real Madrid. Then it was time to rent out at Heerenveen to get playing time. 3 goals and 5 assists in 43 games for the Dutch club was pretty neat. The following season, Vitesse asked to hire the football services of the Norwegian wonderkid. This is where it all came off.
Ødegaard showed more of his potential as a playmaker and finisher, scoring 11 goals and 13 assists in 39 games in the Vitesse shirt. Then came Real Sociedad, then Arsenal, the rest is Premier League history.
After Ødegaard’s loan stay, Vitesse has struggled greatly financially. The club has been punished several times with hefty points penalties, last season the club was eliminated from the Eredivisie. This season Vitesse also started with minus six points, in November 21 points (!) disappeared due to a mess in the economy.
Last in the second division with minus eight points. This is the tragic sporting status, but at least now the supporters can breathe a sigh of relief: On Friday, new owners are in place with immediate effect. This gives Vitesse again positive equity and the club is saved from bankruptcy.
Then the rescue work can move on to building foundations for the future.
