Deep down, everyone, even England’s boring national team manager Thomas Tuchel, knows that Mason Greenwood is more than good enough to be part of the national team squad. – Despite four straight wins in qualifying, just like Norway, England have not impressed, but because Group K is one of the weakest, Tuchel’s inadequacy has not become so visible yet.

Well, just like Manchester United, the national team is preventing “its high morale” from bringing Mason Greenwood back. Greenwood, who has dual citizenship, could, if he chooses, also play for his second home country of Jamaica.

But Mason Greenwood, who has found his way back to top form in Ligue 1, hesitates…
He has arranged a passport to play for Jamaica, but has not decided.
“It’s a bit of a disappointment,” Jamaica national team coach Steve McClaren said, according to The Independent.

Marseille star Mason Greenwood, 23, has not played national team football since 2020, when he was sent home from England’s squad after breaching Iceland’s quarantine rules during the coronavirus pandemic. Greenwood was later also stopped from playing for Manchester United, as he was accused of rape, but the investigation was later dropped.

Lately, he has instead obtained a Jamaican passport to play for Jamaica’s national team, but now he seems to be hesitant to play for the “Reggae Boyz”.

Jamaica national team coach Steve McClaren confirms that Greenwood is waiting to make a decision.

“We arranged a passport, and we expected him to come to this gathering, but after talks with his family, we have found out that he will not commit to any national team right now. He takes his time, so it’s a bit of a disappointment. We must have patience and will keep in touch with Him. From my conversations with Mason and his family, I know that he loves and respects Jamaica,” McClaren says according to the British newspaper The Independent, and continues:

“He wants to concentrate on club football and not commit to a national team right now. We have to respect that, no matter how much we have worked to get him here. Who knows what will happen in the future.

England national team coach Thomas Tuchel has no plans to take Greenwood out.

“I haven’t spoken to him or to his club. My opinion is that he is trying to play for Jamaica, so we don’t think about it. He was not relevant now, and we are not thinking about him in terms of our team,” he says according to the British newspaper.

Greenwood was first loaned from Manchester United to Getafe in the 2023-2024 season, then signed for Marseille in the summer of 2024. So far, the Englishman has recorded 23 goals and eight assists in 39 appearances for the French giants.
