Manchester United are more than open to selling Mason Mount. “The opportunities should be there, but the playmaker may not agree.

Now there are reports that Mason Mount has made a decision about his future after another frustrating season at Old Trafford.

The Chelsea talent has yet to live up to expectations following his arrival at Manchester United following a £57.9 million deal in 2023, with just four goals and one assist in 46 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Mount still has three years left on his contract with an option for another year, but it is claimed that the club are open to selling him this summer at the right price.

Mount fits naturally in one of the two “number 10” roles
Mount is a natural fit in one of the two attacking midfield roles behind the striker in Ruben Amorim’s system. But the Portuguese has already reinforced that position with the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Moreover, it is understood that Man United have now made a new bid for Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo, while captain Bruno Fernandes has rejected offers from Al-Hilal to be hosted at the “Theatre of Dreams”.

Mount “does not plan” to leave Man United
Mason Mount will thus face even stronger competition for playing time in his preferred role next season. But according to Fabrizio Romano, the England international still has no plans to seek new challenges in the summer transfer window.

Romano adds that Mount’s sole focus is to get back to full fitness, and he is looking forward to his first full preseason and first full season under Amorim’s leadership.

Injuries have put the brakes on Mount
The 26-year-old began to gain Amorim’s trust towards the end of the season, starting in the Europa League final and in each of United’s last four Premier League games – scoring one goal in the 4-3 loss to Brentford.

However, Mount’s 2024/25 season was marred by two hamstring injuries and he has already missed 50 games in all competitions since his arrival, having also been out with a serious calf injury in 2023/24.

The playmaker will now aim to work his way back into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup, but he has not played for the national team since the Qatar World Cup two and a half years ago.

Why it would make little sense for Mount to leave United
When Amorim first arrived and implemented his 3-4-3 system with two attacking midfielders behind the striker instead of two traditional wingers, the consensus was that Mount would be one of the biggest winners.

Injuries have so far prevented the 26-year-old from making much of an impression, but the fact that he was preferred over Alejandro Garnacho in the Europa League final shows that Amorim clearly has a lot of faith in the Englishman.

The increased competition from Cunha – and potentially Mbeumo too – should only further motivate Mount to show what he can really do on the offensive side of the pitch. What he needs most in the coming months is continuity and playing time.

Therefore, it would make little sense for the striker to change clubs to a new environment, a new manager and new ideas – especially when his current manager clearly sees the potential in him.

With Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Marcus Rashford all expected to seek new challenges, it would also be pointless to get rid of the player who is most comfortable in an introverted role of all four.
