Reports claim that Mauricio Pochettino’s possible return to Tottenham Hotspur is dependent on the London-based club paying a significant compensation package to the United States men’s national team.

Ange Postecoglou was sacked as Spurs manager on Friday, despite winning the Europa League final in May, ending the club’s 17-year trophy drought.

Tottenham’s management considered the domestic results to be too poor to justify giving the Australian another season at the helm, and it is not difficult to understand why he was sacked, as the team finished the season in 17th place.

A number of names have been linked to the vacant managerial position, including Pochettino.

According to a BBC report, however, supporters will want the Argentine back, but getting him away from the US national team could require one of the biggest compensation packages “in football history”.

Why Pochettino might be a good candidate

Pochettino himself has publicly admitted that he would like to return to Spurs as manager, but he insisted that a return was years away when he told reporters in March:

“I’m in the U.S., so I’m not going to talk about [a return], but what I said at the time I still feel, after five or six years, in my heart. Yes, I would like to come back someday.”

The 53-year-old coach was head coach of the club between May 2014 and November 2019, and he managed to reach the EFL Cup final in 2014-15, as well as the Champions League final in 2018-19.

Pochettino led Spurs to a second-place finish in 2016-17, and their score of 86 was two higher than what Liverpool, who won the league in 2024-25, were able to achieve.

Although some criticized him for not delivering trophies, he was often not supported in the transfer market with the necessary funds.

In fact, Tottenham became the first Premier League club since the introduction of the summer transfer window not to sign a single player during the 2018-19 season.

Considering that the Argentine did not receive sufficient support, there is an argument that he could finally get the north London-based team over the line if he returned and received the necessary support this summer.
