The Dutch international, who has played for Manchester United, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, made a surprising move in September 2024 when he signed for Brazilian giants Corinthians on a two-year contract.
The well-travelled striker has scored 16 goals in 58 appearances for his current employer, but recently there has been a serious problem related to Depay’s living arrangements.
Depay reportedly earns around £90,000 a week at Corinthians, with many significant bonuses attached to performance.
But in addition to this, the 31-year-old managed to negotiate a number of other benefits that the club agreed to.
According to UOL Esporte, Corinthians, who has already paid around £3 million to Depay, pays £35,000 per month for his presidential suite.
They also cover room service, food and cleaning bills, as well as paying for a private chef and butler, personal bodyguard, armored car and personal driver.
Globo Esporte previously reported that, for the duration of the contract, Depay is also entitled to 24 business class flights between Brazil and Europe, as well as a VIP box at the Neo Quimica Arena, Corinthian’s home arena.
Still, the São Paulo club is desperately trying to get its number 10 to leave its current penthouse residence in favor of cheaper lodging, but has so far been unsuccessful in its attempts to get Depay to move.
Elaborating on the situation, UOL journalist Livia Camilla said, “We spoke to sources who are in contact with Memphis, who are part of his inner circle or who work with his staff, and they say that under no circumstances will he leave the hotel.
So it’s conflicting information; one says one thing, the other says another, but in the minutes of the meeting, Osmar Stabile [Corinthians president] said he asked Memphis to move.”
While Corinthians is confident that he will agree to move, the player’s entourage believes that it is unlikely that he will voluntarily move since he enjoys the hotel’s facilities.
When he first arrived in Brazil, Depay looked at various properties in the Alphaville area but didn’t decide on any.
Instead, he chose to stay at the hotel, which is in a more convenient location since it is much closer to the club’s training facility.
According to Globo, Depay has a unilateral severance clause in his Corinthians deal, which allows him to leave the club for a foreign club at any time, as long as he personally pays the £4.4 million fine.
