Jose Mourinho admits he had a dilemma last week when Manchester United and Tottenham clashed in the Europa League final. The Portuguese has led both clubs and has put in a few years of commitment, although the exit from the two clubs came “raw and brutal”. He treated Son Heung-Min to the final title for Tottenham, but is rooting for Ruben Amorim for the long run.

“I was torn because on the one hand I love United and have a fantastic relationship with Ruben, but on the other hand when I saw ‘Sonny’ in tears with the trophy, and also for the Tottenham fans it is of course a special feeling,” Jose Mourinho told Sky Sports.

Then to Ruben Amorim as United manager.

“Of course, it has a huge impact, in terms of Manchester United not playing in any European tournament, but at the same time it seems like they support Ruben. They give him time and opportunity to continue,” Mourinho continues.

Which compares Amorim’s situation to his own, when he took over as Porto coach half an eternity ago.

“When I went to Porto, the same thing happened to me. I came in January and had a difficult six months, where we even struggled to qualify for the UEFA Cup, and then it went the way it did,” Mourinho said. And refers to the Champions League title with Porto in 2004.

In other words, Mourinho has faith that Ruben Amorim, with confidence, will succeed as Manchester United manager.
