The stars are withdrawing from Monte Carlo. The tournament that opens the clay tournament season will miss multiple event winner Rafa Nadal, world number 2 Carlos Alcaraz, and young talent Felix Auger-Aliassime. All because of injuries.
Eleven-time Monte-Carlo champion Rafael Nadal has officially retired from the Monte Carlo Masters. Carlos Alcaraz and Felix Auger-Aliassime also withdrew from the first clay-court Masters 1000 of the season. All due to injury, as reported in their official statements.
In the worst situation is Rafael Nadal, who has been battling an injury since January, and the results of rehabilitation are still unsatisfactory. The Spaniard, however, does not put down the racket, as many feared. In his statement, he said he intended to return. The tennis world is counting on Nadal to be ready for Roland Garros. The Spaniard is the absolute king of this grand slam. He won it 14 times. His eventual triumph this year would be his 15th win. No one else in the history of tennis has had such success at any tournament.
“I’m still not ready to compete at the highest level, so I won’t be able to play in one of the most important tournaments of my career, Monte Carlo. Unfortunately, I am not yet able to play with maximum guarantees and I am continuing the process of recovery and preparation, hoping to return to competition soon.” wrote Nadal, whose injury ended his historic 912-week reign in the world’s top 10. The two-time Olympic gold medalist is now in 14th place.
Former world No. 1 Alcaraz withdrew, citing arthritis in his left arm and muscular discomfort in his spine.
World No. 7 Auger-Aliassime has retired to recover from a left knee injury.
