It was a smiling Ruben Amorim answering questions before this weekend’s Bournemouth game. The Portuguese has survived his first English winter, but only barely sportingly. Now he is looking forward to a final month of training and Premier League games, leading United to the Europa League title and Champions League ticket plus the prospect of starting the preseason with the necessary reinforcements.

The United manager was asked if he was afraid that the best players would steer clear of signing with a Manchester in crisis.

“If you look at the club now, with all the problems there are, a change of coach, it looks like there is a problem,” Amorim begins.

Then the Portuguese smile comes out.

“But we have a clear idea and it’s the easiest thing to explain to a player. Also this is Manchester United, and all players want to play for Manchester United,” says Amorim.

There is no denying the confidence of the United manager after months of beating from Premier League opponents and the English media. That bodes well.
