A lot of the headlines about Newcastle this summer have been about who could leave the club, rather than who could come. Swedish goal machine Alexander Isak continues to be the subject of intense rumours of a move to Liverpool, although the Magpies are confident that he will stay.
Newcastle are understood to be willing to break their wage structure to give Isak a new and improved contract. If it is signed, the speculation will end, and attention can be turned to new signings.
BIG NEWS: This is the club Victor Osimhen wants to sign for
On that front, news broke on Thursday evening that Newcastle have made their second bid for Isak’s national team colleague Anthony Elanga.
Their initial bid of £45 million was rejected by Nottingham Forest
The upwardly revised second bid is reportedly worth £50 million plus £5 million in bonuses, and according to The Daily Mail, it is “on the verge” of being “accepted”.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also painted a positive picture for Newcastle:
“Personal terms are also close to being agreed, as Newcastle want to get the deal in place as soon as possible.”
Elanga accounted for six goals and eleven assists in the Premier League last season and has developed into one of the league’s most effective attacking players since leaving Manchester United two years ago.
Many at Old Trafford may regret the decision to let Elanga leave, but they will at least make a good profit from his move to Newcastle…
Manchester United profit from Anthony Elanga transfer
Manchester United only received £15 million when they sold Elanga to Nottingham Forest. Now that Newcastle are willing to pay £55 million, his value has risen by a whopping £40 million in just two years.
Luckily for Manchester United, they included a resale clause in the deal.
David Ornstein of The Athletic confirmed the existence of the clause in his update on Elanga on Thursday evening:
“Manchester United are entitled to a significant share of any resale price from Forest.”
The Daily Mail clarified that United “is entitled to an estimated 15 percent of the profits from any sale.”
Since Elanga was bought for £15 million and can now be sold for £55 million, United will be entitled to 15 per cent of Forest’s £40 million profit – that is, £6 million.
In a summer where United do not have an abundance of funds, this will be a significant help for Ruben Amorim.
Another resale clause that United can benefit from is the one in Álvaro Carreras’ contract with Benfica. Carreras is expected to finalize a move to Real Madrid during July.
