Athletic Club doesn’t give up: Makes it harder for Nico Williams to go to FC Barcelona

The intention of the management of the Basque club is clear: they want to block, or at least delay, the transfer of the 22-year-old winger as much as possible. This week, representatives from Athletic Club’s board of directors traveled to Madrid – not only for matters related to women’s football, but also to demand explanations for Barça’s financial situation.
Athletic Club demands that La Liga pay close attention
Based on recent statements by Javier Tebas, in which he claimed that Barça has not yet met the strict financial requirements (1:1 rule), Athletic wants to pressure LaLiga to closely monitor the Catalan club’s every move. The Athletic Club is prepared for a direct confrontation if necessary.
Nico Williams’ €58 million buyout clause
Nico’s €58 million buyout clause is still the most direct way to complete the transfer, but Athletic Club don’t want it all to come down to this. They insist that the transaxle must be approved by LaLiga and follow all points in the current regulations.
On the player’s side, the decision has already been made. His agent, Félix Tainta, has informed the club that Williams wants to join Barça this summer. Despite a generous renewal offer from Athletic, his attitude has not changed.
At the same time, Barça has not yet taken any official action. It is expected that they will trigger the buyout clause in the coming weeks, but tensions between the two clubs are rising. This transitional saga is only at the beginning and promises to be long-lasting – with Nico Williams dreaming of wearing the teal colors but still faces many obstacles.
