Most expect far less madness in Barcelona this time as the vast majority expect re-election for Barcelona president Joan Laporta and his loved ones.

Not surprisingly, Laporta is a popular leader. Barcelona are the reigning La Liga champions, they lead the league after this weekend’s game against Mallorca and the economy, which was in complete crisis a few years ago, is recovering sharply after three years of profit.

Today’s news that Laporta and parts of the board are resigning is not as dramatic as it sounds, they are resigning in order to run for re-election.

The president until now and several other board members are resigning with the intention of presenting a new candidacy for the elections on March 15.

According to article 42.f of FC Barcelona’s statutes, president Joan Laporta has resigned from his position in order to be eligible to run in the elections to the board, which will be held on March 15. This resignation was formalized at the ordinary board meeting held this Monday, where the election announcement was officially published.

Barcelona writes: Along with Laporta, several members of the current board have also resigned their positions to participate in the electoral process. Specifically, resignation statements were presented by the Vice President of the Institutional Area, Elena Fort; the Vice President for the Social Area, Rafael Escudero; and board members Ferran Oliver, Josep Maria Albert, Xavier Barbany, Miquel Camps, Aureli Mas, Xavier Puig and Joan Soler i Ferré.

Now that these resignations have been formalized, the Board of Directors will continue to carry out its duties until the end of the current period, which is scheduled for June 30, under a new configuration. Until then, the club’s highest governing body will consist of Rafael Yuste as president, Josep Cubells as vice president and secretary, Alfons Castro as treasurer, and board members Josep Ignasi Macià, Àngel Riudalbas, Joan Solé i Sust and Sisco Pujol.

After official confirmation, the new board then continued the meeting in line with the established agenda.
