On Tuesday, Martin Ødegaard and Arsenal took the first stab at Sporting. A 0-1 win gives the London club an excellent starting point for the second leg at the Emirates, but Manchester United, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Chelsea also breathe a sigh of relief. With the victory of their rival, UEFA released the Premier League’s fifth Champions League ticket for next season. This gives the four clubs either breathing room or extra opportunity to gain entry to the biggest football party in Europe.

The Premier League will now have at least five clubs in next season’s Champions League, as they have secured a so-called “European Performance Spot” for the second season in a row. It is a system that UEFA has introduced. Here, the two leagues that perform best overall in the three European competitions will get an extra place in the Champions League the following season, reports BBC Sport.

The system therefore takes into account the results in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, where all nine English teams advanced from the regular season and reached the knockout stages. The Premier League has therefore been strong in the fight for the extra Champions League spot, and with Arsenal’s win in Lisbon, it was finally secured on Tuesday night.
