Klete Keller, former American swimmer and Olympic champion in Athens and Beijing in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay teamed with Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, was sentenced to six months of house arrest and three years’ probation for his role in the attack on the Capitol in Washington, January 6, 2021.
Olympic swimming gold medalist Klete Keller was sentenced to 36 months’ probation and six months of house arrest for his role in the storming of the US Capitol. The swimmer pleaded guilty, avoiding prison time after pleading guilty to a federal crime. Keller, now 41, will have to serve house arrest and perform 10 hours of community service every month.
Keller was convicted for his role in the 2021 storming of the Capitol. He was one of the first to plead guilty. The two-time Olympic champion could be seen in videos wearing a Team USA jacket in the Capitol rotunda surrounded by other members of the pro-Donald party.
Federal prosecutors had sought a 10-month prison sentence, saying Keller’s actions “will forever remain a stain on this country’s narrative.” But given Keller’s extensive cooperation with the government since turning himself in and his “genuine” remorse for his behavior, they urged the judge to give him a much lighter prison sentence.
The final sentence was six months of house arrest, community service and 36 months of suspended prison.
