If you ask a Newcastle supporter today what they remember of former club owner Mike Ashley, you’ll probably get a buzz in response. The Englishman owned Newcastle for 14 years before selling the club to the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) in 2021, during his ownership hailed criticism from the club’s supporters, especially for not investing enough. Now Ashley is out on a club spree again.

Ashley has previously shown interest in Championship clubs such as Derby County, Coventry City and Reading, now he has his sights set on Sheffield Wednesday, reports The Telegraph.

Sheffield Wednesday have had problems paying salaries to players and managers on time for a long time. This is due to the fact that owner and chairman Dejphon Chansiri has had debts in his other businesses. In October, the club applied for restructuring of the company. Companies that are suffering from financial problems but are considered viable in the long term can apply for restructuring of the company to try and save their business from going bankrupt. It is an alternative to bankruptcy, and the procedure goes through the courts.

In parallel, Chansiri has been in talks with several parties about a sale, and now there has been an offer for the club from Ashley, claims the English media. The bid is said to be £20 million.

It remains to be seen how Chansiri reacts to the bid. We’re guessing Newcastle supporters have a thing or two to warn Sheffield Wednesday supporters about. Not sure things will get much better in the long run, with Ashley at the helm.
