Xabi Alonso went into his last Bundesliga game as Bayer Leverkusen coach on May 17. Last season ended with the historic league gold, this season it was 2nd place and a secure Champions League ticket. The genius coach, who as recently as 2022 was in his first head coaching job for Real Sociedad’s second team, made sure to leave German football with a historic streak.
At times, it looked like Mainz were going to give Leverkusen a loss, but Alonso’s team held on for a 2-2 draw (Mainz had three goals disallowed by VAR).

Last season, Alonso and Leverkusen went through the whole season without a single loss, this season the level has been on a more “human level”, but still, away from home, Leverkusen have not let themselves be outsmarted.
On Saturday after a draw away to Mainz, Xabi Alonso’s Lerverkusen have set an impressive record in the Bundesliga with 34 consecutive games without defeat away from home.
