Paris Saint-Germain have reached a “tentative deal” for one of their biggest transfer targets, according to reports – and he could be ready to play in this summer’s Club World Cup if they advance to the play-offs.

Many believe that the Club World Cup is just nonsense and should be discontinued as soon as possible. – The only reason why big clubs bother to play and use their best players is the huge prize pool of 1 billion dollars. The fact that the tournament is also played in the United States, which is not a football nation and at the same time thinks they are the center of the world does not make it any better.

Luis Enrique’s side suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat against Brazilian side Botafogo on Thursday, following a first-half goal from Igor Jesus that secured a memorable result against the reigning European champions.

After a clear 4-0 win over Atlético Madrid in the tournament opener, PSG will be hoping to advance from the group stage when they face MLS side Seattle Sounders in their final group game.

Zabarnyi on his way to PSG

If all goes as planned, the French club could sign Ukrainian international Illya Zabarnyi to the squad, after it has emerged that Bournemouth and PSG have reached a tentative deal for the highly valued defender.

This is reported by journalist Sacha Tavolieri, who claims that the details of a potential transfer are being finalized. The 22-year-old centre-back is set to sign a five-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

In addition, French newspaper L’Équipe claims that the transfer is expected to land at around €60 million (about £51.3 million), with no bonuses included.

Can become historical record

PSG hope that Zabarnyi can be registered in time for the Club World Cup play-offs, but they must first secure advancement from the group stage. The team is currently in second place in Group B.

FIFA has opened up a temporary registration window from June 27 to July 3, which allows clubs to replace or add players during the tournament.

“The goal is to encourage clubs and players whose contracts expire to find a solution that allows players to participate,” says FIFA. “This ensures that the best players can play, and allows clubs to bring in new players even during the tournament.”

If the deal is completed and PSG advances, they will become the first team ever to sign a player and register him for the Club World Cup playoffs during the tournament.

Zabarnyi – an important piece for Bournemouth

Zabarnyi, who joined Bournemouth from Dynamo Kyiv in January 2023 for a sum of around £24 million, has played a key role for “The Cherries” since his arrival.

In total, he has made 86 appearances across all competitions, including 39 appearances last season when Bournemouth finished in a respectable 9th place in the Premier League.

Now a possible record transfer to PSG awaits – and perhaps a Club World Cup debut in what could be a historic transfer.
