Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is reportedly determined to bring Barcelona midfielder Fermín López to the Etihad Stadium in this summer transfer window.

Fermín López – a key player for Barcelona

The 22-year-old was a key player for Barcelona in the 2024/25 season, with eight goals and ten assists in 46 appearances across all competitions.

In La Liga, he recorded six goals and five assists in 28 games as Hansi Flick’s side won the league, while in the Champions League he had one goal and four assists in 11 games.

The Spaniard has a contract with Camp Nou until June 2029, and Barcelona are not active sellers this summer – but speculation about his future is increasing.

Manchester United are also said to be interested, and it has recently been reported that Al Ahli is willing to pay £51 million to bring him to the Saudi Arabian league.

Guardiola wants Fermín for City

According to Fichajes, Guardiola is a big admirer of the midfielder and is pushing for a signing this summer.

The report claims that the City manager believes Fermín can be a key player in his midfield.

Fermín has been at Barcelona since 2016 and worked his way up through the club’s youth academy. After a successful loan spell at Linares Deportivo (12 goals), he returned to Camp Nou in the summer of 2023.

In 2023/24, he made 42 appearances for the Catalan team, followed by 46 appearances last season, and he consistently put in performances in the biggest games.

Fermín has the perfect “skillset” to succeed in the Premier League. His energy, work capacity and ball skills could have made him a star in English football.

Of course, Barcelona would like to keep him, but the club’s well-known financial challenges open the door to a possible transfer – with City being one of the strongest candidates.
