For a long time, there was talk that Girona manager Míchel would take over on the day Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola resigned. City Football Group has large ownership interests in the Spanish club, so a transfer would be easy.
But then, before Christmas last year, it came to light that Manchester City had talks with Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, which although it was “clarified” was not well received by players and fans at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca expected to replace Guardiola
Pep Guardiola secured the League Cup title for Manchester City in March, but he has experienced a difficult time with the English giants in recent seasons.
Last season, they lost the Premier League to Liverpool, and in two straight Champions League play-offs, there have been early exits against Real Madrid. – Also, this season, Arsenal finally looks to take the Premier League title. Manchester City, who have one game less played, are a full 9 points behind.
The French newspaper L’Equipe now states that the Spaniard is expected to leave his managerial job after the season. And the replacement is said to have already been appointed by the City management.
It is about Enzo Maresca. The Italian previously worked in Guardiola’s support system, and according to the information, is considered the perfect successor.
Maresca is currently clubless after being sacked by Chelsea at the beginning of 2026.
