It is one of the world’s longest-serving managers who has now “by mutual agreement” with immediate effect resigned as manager of Kansas City.

Peter Vermes’ long run as Kansas City’s manager began on August 4, 2009, and marked the start of a winning era when the club changed its name to Sporting KC and moved into Children’s Mercy Park ahead of the 2011 season. He led Sporting to first-place finishes in the Eastern Conference in 2011 and 2012, including a club-record 63 points in the 2012 regular season.

Peter Vermes has been fired

“It would be hard to list all the people I want to thank after 20 seasons in leadership positions at Sporting Kansas City,” Vermes told the club’s pages. “I am grateful to everyone, especially the ownership for giving me the opportunity to be a steward of this club for the past two decades. I wish the club nothing but the best in the future.”

But now the Vermes era is over. The 58-year-old manager has been fired.

Before Vermes became coach of Sporting Kansas City, he worked as the club’s technical director.
