Typically, the first World Cup (or European Championship) playoffs that Norway is qualified for in over two decades is in danger of collapsing or at least crumbling.
Germany, which is one of the world’s most important football nations and a supporter of Denmark in connection with Greenland, is watching what is happening in FIFA and the upcoming World Cup finals with great concern.

German politician Jürgen Hardt has suggested that a boycott of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico could be a “last resort” in response to Donald Trump’s threats against Greenland. – This comes at the same time as one of England’s biggest TV personalities Jeff Stelling asks FIFA to move the 2026 World Cup from the US to the UK.
US President Donald Trump believes that his country must acquire Greenland, the world’s largest island, for the sake of national security.
The demands have been rejected by Greenland’s leaders and by NATO member Denmark, under which the island is a semi-autonomous territory. Trump, for his part, has not ruled out the use of military force.
In fact, Trump has recently threatened to impose tariffs on countries that do not “keep up” with his plan to annex Greenland. “We need Greenland for national security,” he added.
Amid the ongoing controversy, the United States is preparing to host this year’s World Cup, although experts warn that the participation of several countries could be jeopardized as a result of escalating political and military tensions.
The 2026 World Cup will take place in 16 cities in three North American countries: the United States, Canada and Mexico.
In comments given to the German newspaper Bild, Hardt said that a boycott would be a response to Trump’s threats against Greenland.
“However, withdrawing from the tournament will only be considered as a last resort to make Trump come to his senses on the Greenland issue,” he said, before pointing out that Trump has made clear “how important the World Cup is to him.”
The report states that Hardt is the first top politician to propose the word “boycott.” – Many other politicians are also critical, but so far use milder words.
The 62-year-old also expressed his “confidence that we will reach a better common understanding of security within NATO when it comes to the Greenland issue.”
Since it was founded in 1930, Germany has only missed two World Cups. They did not participate in the first World Cup in 1930 and were excluded from the World Cup in 1950 after World War II.
Apart from football, West Germany boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, joining the protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
