The German press is not merciful in its description of former Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita, who has been on loan from German side Werder Bremen to Hungarian side Ferencváros for the past year.

You can see the arrows pointing downwards when you go from the Premier League, to the Bundesliga to Hungarian football! – Not many words are used to describe Naby Keita, the ones that are used are mostly variants of failure and flop.

Now Bremen announce that Keita is leaving the club to play for Ferencváros permanently.

  • After the loan stay ended, we have now found a solution that satisfies all parties involved. We wish Naby all the best in the future, says Clemens Fritz, football manager at Werder Bremen, on the club’s website.

Keita joined Bremen from Liverpool in 2023 and was listed for five games. The 30-year-old has so far provided five assists in 28 appearances for the Hungarian giants.

His time in Bremen was both damaged and conflict-driven. Keita was suspended by the club for a period of time – after choosing not to travel to an away game. According to German media, the midfielder was initially part of the team’s squad, but chose to sit out the game after he was told that he would start the game on the bench.

The German newspaper Bild has previously described Keita as “one of the biggest failures in the club’s history”.
