The Polish national football team without a coach. Fernando Santos was fired as national team coach. The decision was announced three days after the defeat of the Polish national team against Albania in the qualifying round for the 2024 European Championship.

Fernando Santos has been the coach of the Polish national football team for almost nine months. Poland hoped that Santos would raise the level of play of the national team. After all, he has, among others, triumph in the European Championship, which he won while coaching Portugal. Unfortunately, he did not achieve any significant successes in Poland. As a coach, he coached Poland in six matches. He won three of them: against Albania (1-0) and the Faroe Islands (2-0) in the Euro 2024 qualifiers and against Germany (1-0) in a friendly. He lost three of them. These defeats were much more significant than the victories, because each of them was a match with specific stakes. The decision to dismiss Santos was probably made after Poland’s defeat against Albania on Sunday. As a result, Poland is in penultimate place in the group in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, so it will be difficult for them to advance.

Santos’ contract was to last until the end of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. However, the Polish Football Association decided to terminate the contract with Santos now. The contracts with Santos and his assistants were terminated on September 13. Who will replace Santos?

– The selection of a new coach is now a priority for the PZPN management board, so we will soon announce when the presentation of the new coach will take place – said the president of the PZPN, Cezary Kulesza.
