Okay, it wasn’t the Premier League, but it was a game against a Premier League club. So when Rasmus Højlund shows himself and makes even Ruben Amorim smile, then there has been development. It will be extra interesting when this is the United player who in recent months has been heavily linked to an exit and return to Serie A, where the clubs are queuing up.

The 22-year-old has mostly received criticism over the past year and also deserves recognition. Ruben Amorim has never questioned the work effort the Dane puts in every single training and match day, it is the flair and efficiency that has been all about. Against West Ham in the friendly on Saturday, the United striker showed some of the potential that has not come out against English clubs.

Manchester United won 2-1 with two Bruno Fernandes goals, but it was Rasmus Hojlund that the United manager highlighted in the post-match press conference when asked who had impressed.

“Rasmus did well. I liked Rasmus’ game very much. His running and the way he fought one-on-one when we gave him the ball. He played well with his teammates, so he did a very good job,” says Amorim.

The 22-year-old came close to giving himself and United a dream start with a post shot, one minute into the game, but even then it didn’t go in. Still, do we sense a Ruben Amorim who sees a Højlund sale not completed this summer and neither striker reinforcement on the way in?
