On Saturday, Chelsea gave up three precious points at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League to Newcastle, on Monday the club reached a settlement with the Premier League. The first means that Liverpool are over in the Premier League table with Chelsea down in 6th place. The other results in both a fine and a transfer ban.
This punishment is linked to the time when Roman Abramovich was the owner. The new ownership itself reported to the Premier League and other authorities that they discovered some old payments and transfers at the takeover that they found suspicious. This was in the period 2011-2018. There are allegedly payments to agents, third parties and offshore companies that were not reported correctly in the club’s official accounts, reports Sky Sports.

This means Chelsea as a club will have to pay a total fine of £10.75 million. In addition, they have been banned from registering players for the academy for nine months. For the first team, the transfer ban is conditional for two years. That means if they break the rules again within that period, the ban will go into effect. A transitional ban will then apply for one year, if that happens, it is reported.

The punishment would normally have been harsher, but the Premier League states Chelsea’s “proactive self-reporting” and “exceptional cooperation” throughout the investigation served as significant mitigating factors when potential sanctions were considered.
