In several transfer windows, Chelsea have made sure to bid over Arsenal or Liverpool to secure the most sought-after talent. Now it has turned out that some of these players have struggled to establish themselves in the Premier League, but Chelsea’s American owner still loves to win bidding battles. This time it is Manchester United who will fall short in the battle for the signature of Ruben Amorim’s favourite at Sporting.

Ever since Ruben Amorim pulled on his training jacket with the Manchester United logo, a 17-year-old has been linked to the Premier League. Geovany Quenda was the player Amorim had on the pitch from the start on the right wing at Sporting when Manchester City were overrun in the Champions League. The challenge for United has nevertheless emerged.

Various English media outlets have reported United are in “advanced talks” about signing Quenda, with INEOS and United management believing a bid of around £33 million is enough to convince Sporting. Earlier in March, various Portuguese media believed that this bid meets closed doors.

Over the weekend, various international media and transfer journalist Romano reported that Chelsea are close to signing the United goal.

Chelsea have clearly pushed the right buttons with Sporting management: €50 million in transfer fees, with Quenda allowed to stay at Sporting until the summer of 2026.

Sporting coach Rui Borges talks about the 17-year-old’s extreme development.

“It’s his merit, not mine or Ruben Amorim’s. He understands the game and has an individual quality. In the U17 team, they would just give him the ball and then he would probably solve it, but here he has to be involved in several phases of the game. He is a boy who loves to listen and learn,” Borges says according to A Bola.

Sorry, Amorim, Chelsea took advantage of Manchester United’s inertia.
