In second place in La Liga and still on the right track in the Champions League, Xabi Alonso was sacked. This is less than eight months after the appointment. Declared a genius as Bayer Leverkusen coach, at the top of Liverpool and Bayern Munich’s wish list. A bitter Supercopa defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona was apparently too much for Real president Perez and the gang. On Monday, Alvaro Arbeloa was given a few minutes to prepare. He was supposed to take over for Alonso later in the day.

Alvaro Arbeloa has worn both the Liverpool and Real Madrid shirts, but has stayed away from the spotlight since 2017. Since then, Arbeloa has spent his days coaching youth teams at Real Madrid. “At this club, a draw is bad enough, a tragedy. Imagine such a defeat. It’s painful and I’m sure all the supporters are hurt, even more so when it happens against a team from a lower level,” Arbeloa told Real Madrid’s website.
