In 2021, Real Madrid signed one of Bayern Munich’s centre-backs, who the year before had played for Treble’s Bundesliga club. David Alaba on the expiring contract had a salary demand Bayern were not willing to meet, the La Liga giant saw no problem in putting together a financial package that ends up at a total of 115 million euros. Now the mood has changed in Madrid.

According to Der Spiegel, the Austrian international pulled in 17.7 million euros in sign-on fees, his agent and dad Alaba shared 11,5 million euros, while Alaba pulls in 19,47 million euros per season. This contract runs until 2026, but now Real Madrid want to leave, one year early.

The centre-back has 116 appearances in the Real shirt, but has had both this and last season eaten up by injuries. According to The Athletic, Real Madrid are trying to sell Alaba this summer. The extreme wage expense and recurring injuries have put Alaba on the sales list.

We don’t see how a club can bear salary expectations of almost 20 million euros, when the CV of the last two seasons is dominated by injuries. Even clubs in the “Ronaldo League” can calculate that the probability of losing big on an Alaba signing is high.
