Bayern Munich tried for the longest time to get star centre-back David Alaba to extend his contract in 2021, but the Austrian had been convinced by Real Madrid management that his future as a free agent lay at the San Bernabeu with a wild €432,000 in weekly wages. Five years later, it is over, without player or club being left with the great sporting dividend.

The 33-year-old Alaba has cashed in the gigantic salary, but for Real Madrid, the centre-back has been working in just 126 games since 2021. Various various, serious injuries have put a spanner in the works for Alaba.
